From the 1950s Reggae sound systems thrived in Britain as a vital musical hot line to the Carribbean. Sound systems played Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae and Dub across Britain competing in sound clashes to establish who had the best or Champion Sound.

Many people from the Carribean came to Coventry to work in the car industry that dominated the city bringing their love of sound systems with them. Whilst in the US the motor city of Detroit gave birth to Motown, Britains motor city Coventry produced the ska sounds of 2-Tone.

Emerging 2-Tone bands such as The Specials, The Beat and The Selector created a new urban sound that mixed black and white musicians adding their own style to the ska music their parents had listend to.

From parts stolen from their parents Bluespot radiograms to heavy weight sounds of the 18" scoop Champion Sound tells the story of the sound systems, venues and sound boys that provided the backdrop for 2-Tone and reggae to flourish in the UK.

Featuring Lynval Golding of the Specials, King Tubby, Sir Coxsone and Carl from Quaker City who played his first dance in 1963, Sound System traces the origins of sound system culture from its roots in Jamaica to its beginnings in England in the 60's and its role in uniting disaffected black British youth in the 70's. The program touches on the positive social impact of sound system culture on black society in Britain and its influence on the development of a definitive Black British identity. Finally the program looks at how sound systems contributed to the birth of rave culture in the 80's.

The Sound System soundtrack was re-mixed by Graeme Hamilton of Fine Young Cannibals fame.
